“ I think a lot of times without realizing it, adoptive parents start the story from where we (adoptive parents) started our story, but for the adoptee, it starts when they're conceived. And so I wanted my daughter in the story to be in her birth mother's belly. And that's how it starts” –Laura Khoury
If you have already started your adoption journey, you know that the adoption wait can be lonely and long with many highs and lows. It is important for waiting adoptive families to get support from family & friends and to find an adoption community who understands the highs and lows of the adoption wait.
In this episode, we talk to Laura Khoury about how her & her husband supported each other as they processed their adoption wait together and as very different individuals. Laura is an adoptive mother of two through domestic infant adoption and foster care adoption. She has advice on how to stay flexible during a wait that can change your life with one phone call.
Laura’s unique experience of adopting her daughter through foster care and sharing custody with her daughter’s foster family for a year before finalization led her to create and write a children’s book. The Tale of Mallory Mouse, From Foster Care to Adoption shares her youngest daughter’s story that started with her birth mother and included both a foster family and adoptive family.
If you feel like you and your spouse are processing your adoption wait differently and need advice on how to communicate effectively and grow through the process together, this is the episode for you.
Here’s what you will hear:
The importance of allowing individuals to process the adoption wait in their own way.
Expectations of change and growth as a couple during a waiting season.
How to prepare for the unknown and to lean into being flexible.
Why your future child’s story doesn’t start with you.
